Footie season update - part 1

Footie season update

Well, as you all know, well all of you who are aware of the fact that there is football outside of the respective Premier Leagues, the footie season is underway.

So, this year, I have decided to keep a wee record of the teams that I have a financial interest in.  That's right, I have thrown my money at three football clubs, in the manner of a Thai businessmen, for who strawberry cocaine and hookers no longer has any appeal.

A Scotch team - Stirling Albion, an English team - Scarborough Athletic, and an English team who play in Scotchland - Berwick Rangers, are the lucky recipients of my largesse.  Doubtless, they've wasted the countless pounds I've given them on fast cars and floozies, and I have to tip my hat to them for that.  But on the footie field, here's how things went,

Scarborough 2 Lincoln Moorlands Railway 2 - 7th August 2010
Northern Counties East Football League, Premier Division
Scott Phillips notched twice as Boro rescued a point against the fabulously named Lincoln Moorlands Railway in their season opener. There was controversy as Boro defender Mike Gibson was sent off late on.  Attendance 435

The next match is a biggie.  14th August 2010 sees an away match to Ryton in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, Kick-Off: 3pm at Ryton Football Club, Kingsley Park, Stannerford Road, Crawcrook, Ryton, NE40 3SN.

Albion Rovers 2 Berwick Rangers 2
Berwick Rangers twice came from behind to earn a point in their league curtain-raiser against Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill.  Manager Jimmy Crease was far from happy, considering his side lucky to snatch a draw in the Third Division opener.  Next up, Berwick travel to meet Partick Thistle in the second round of the Alba Challenge Cup in Glasgow tomorrow, before their first official home game against Elgin City at Shielfield on August 14.

GreenockMorton 0 Stirling Albion 0
In Scotchland proper, and for the second season in a row, Stirling Albion kicked off their league campaign with a 0-0 draw against Greenock Morton, but this was so much more satisfying than last year’s stalemate with Stenhousemuir.  Stirling were disciplined and organised and restricted Morton to only a couple of chances as Allan Moore’s men failed to find a way past a stubborn 4-5-1 formation, a week after thrashing Stranraer 7-1 in the first round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.  The Binos might now have won only two of their last 15 opening-day encounters in the league but this was a terrific and well-merited point and an ideal tonic ahead of Saturday’s crucial encounter with fellow promoted club Cowdenbeath at Forthbank.  Attendance 2375

Which means my personal league table reads;

                        P    W    D    L    F    A    Pts
Berwick            1      0     1    0    2    2    1
Scarborough     1      0     1    0    2    2    1
Stirling              1     0     1    0    0    0    1

As usual, the curse of Mr H seems to have struck, as not one of them managed to win a game.  Just the usual, then.
