Carnwath Countdown - T minus 11 days I will soon be paying a visit to my ancestral homelands of Carnwath. About 140 years ago, my Great-Grandfather, John Hamilton, upped sticks and moved from Lesmahagow to Carnwath, got married to Mary Walker, originally fae Linlithgow, and popped out a brood of kids, including my Grandad. I say Carnwath, but I really mean Haywood, a mining village nearby, where he worked as a miner, until the mines closed and they upped and moved to Breich. However, a fair number of Hamiltons stayed in Carnwath, and I remember my Dad used to take us through a couple of times a year, up until I was about 11 or so. Between now and then, I'll be presenting a fact and picture per day, prior to my return. Much like last years return to Polbeth, a full report and photos will follow my visit. The Co-op in Haywood (the Store,) opened it's doors on Christmas Day 1894. |
